This blog is about “Showing up” to be a better leader. What I mean by “Showing up “is all about how you conduct yourself and how others perceive you. There are some massive subjects out there and some amazing content around building your Personal Brand and Emotional Intelligence, however I am going to give you three Golden Nuggets today for you to try out as I know they will help you out in your day to day life, whether it be in business or at home.

As usual, better performance and improved results don’t grow on trees, so you will need to decide if you think they will work for you, then plan it out and then take specific focused action and commit 100%

Below are three of my favourite tip and tricks in regards to showing up and looking like a valued member of the management team. These have helped me progress through my careers and develop as a senior leader. No, I didn’t listen to others when I was younger, however I now realise that I could have made much more out of my life and earlier if I have just taken the time to learn. So its never too late to start learning.

Tip 1
Appearance is everything – be tidy.

People look up to you, whether it be at home or in the office there is always someone watching how you are behaving, how you have dressed and generally how you look. If you want to be taken seriously in your position you must look the part. You must be clean, crisp and confident. Have a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself if there if something that you need to address and take care of.

Tip 2
Essential Body language – top tips!

Body language is talking without speaking. It is seriously underrated in the business world and with a little knowledge and understanding you can really have the upper hand. So when you are presenting, stand tall with loads of air in your lungs in a confident winning stance. Don’t put your hands in your pockets, this generally means that you are hiding something and it can also inadvertently collapse your stance. Finally make sure you have good eye contact, talk to specific people in the room for 5-7 seconds at a time. If you feel uncomfortable looking at someone because it feels like staring then pick a spot between their eyes and focus on that. It feels a bit weird to start with, however with practice it is very effective.

Tip 3
Remember your shadow as a leader.

People copy and mimic other people. If you think about someone you admire or aspire to be then you would more than likely like the way they do something. Either when they are speaking in public or the way they engage or speak to others. Strangely enough people are doing the same to you. So you must be aware of your body language, your tonality, your actions and your attitude. If you walk in the office in the morning and someone says to you “How are you today?” don’t say “Not Bad” because you are probably feeling good, so respond with “I am good thanks!”. Try that for a few days and challenge people around you to tell you what they are rather than what they are not!
