In this episode I share with you how to hire the right apprentice in your IT & Tech Based business.
It enables your business to grow because apprentices can help fill skill gaps by developing the exact skills that you need. These can be tailored to specific job roles, making them flexible to the needs of your business.
In this episode, we had a great time talking with Kevin Lowe, he is an absolute expert when it comes to finding and training the right apprentice and making sure that the apprentice offers value back to you and your business from day one.
Today, you will learn not just to find the right candidate that fits to your business needs but knowing whether it is the best time for you to hire an apprentice.
The purpose of this episode is to help business owners understand the benefits and/or advantages of having the right apprentice for their business, understanding the whole apprenticeship scheme bringing your business to the next level – helping them grow and develop their organisation.
Research has shown that apprenticeship offers myriad of benefits.
By investing in talent development through apprenticeship, employers gain a pipeline of loyal skilled workers, increase productivity, and improve the bottom line however most business owners often overlooked this and is often battling out the whole idea of bringing in an experienced staff rather than an apprentice.
Oftentimes, business owners don’t want to hire an apprentice simply because they don’t have the time nor the resources to train or probably it’s not just easy for them and they don’t have the right support to do so.
Moreover, as companies, whether to bring on apprentices yet most of them have the same question in mind: What if I invest all this time and money training an apprentice, only to have them jump ship when it’s done?
According to Kevin, that’s a possibility, as it is with any employee. But advocates argue that the benefits outweigh the risks.
Hence, they talked about important topics such as.
- The benefit of apprentices to the business owners?
- The benefit to the actual apprentice themselves?
- How they kind of work and how you can help?
Kevin added, when he seeks for the right apprentice, he always asks; What do they like to do in their spare time? Through this, it will help him identify and find out the type of people that he is working with.
Kevin believes, those young, enthusiastic, hungry, passionate apprentices are like a sponge that they are going to suck all the information that you are giving them.
They will just do, follow and complete all the task that you want them to do.
Other topics they talked about:
- What in the pre-qualification process do you look out for?
- How do you choose the right apprentice for your business?
- What are your criteria to make sure that you match to the right candidate with the job role?
- What additional support you can provide to the business owners?

You must teach someone making sure that they have a mentor who is teaching them doing what is right. They need someone to support them, look after them and making sure that what they are doing is right and that they are guided through with all those kinds of support. – Kevin Lowe
